Road rules
  • Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road 
  • All vehicles must carry a reflective safety-vest. The vest can be either yellow or orange, as long as it is officially certified. Drivers are required to wear the vest any time they have to stop on the shoulder of the road and get out of their vehicle. It should be kept in the passenger cabin of the vehicle – not the boot – so that it can be put on prior to the occupant of the car getting out and stepping onto the road
  • Speed limits are strict and radar traps are often set up to catch speeding motorists 
  • Dipped headlights must be used all day 
  • Use of the horn is forbidden in Vienna and is prohibited elsewhere, as indicated by road signs 
  • On mountain roads, ascending vehicles have priority 
  • On city roads, trams on the left have priority
Driving regulations
  1. Minimum age for rental:
    • Minimum age 19 or 25 (depending on car group)
    • A young driver charge of €5 per day, excl. VAT will apply for renters younger than 25 years
    • No maximum age
  2. Driving Licence:
    • Valid Full Driving Licence
    • Non-Europeans must carry an International Driving Permit

Travel tips
