national car

Driving in Bahrain is similar to driving in the United States - the layout and quality of roads is similar.  Traffic signs are in both Arabic and English and travelling by road is generally safe although motorists visiting the country may experience some unsafe driving practices by local drivers. Motorways and major roads in the northern third of Bahrain are four to six lanes wide and well maintained. However, roads in villages and older parts of the Capital City, Manama and Muharraq are narrow and twisting. General advice is always to drive defensively and expect drivers to cut you up, sound their horn, erratic stopping, speeding, and double parking. But do not get aggressive when you encounter this type of driving.

City Driving

  • Urban road conditions tend to be to a reasonable standard

  • It's useful to note that a car flashing its full beam is generally asking for a chance to pass and there is also little use of indicators and little lane discipline

Country Driving

  • Rural roads are well lit in the evenings
