Belgium is well serviced by networks of main roads and toll-free motorways and congestion is normally tolerable outside the major cities, providing business and leisure travellers with a relatively easy journey when renting a car for their visit.

City Driving

  • There is a 50kmh speed limit in cities, if no other signs are shown

  • A driver must stop in front of a pedestrian crossing as soon as the pedestrian shows the intention of crossing the street 

  • If a bicycle route is marked on a one-way street, the cyclist is allowed to ride against the one way one on this markin 

  • Drivers should also be aware of the traffic regulations near schools and other public buildings (indicated by signs)

Country Driving

  • There is a 120kmh Speed Limit on motorways and a 90kmh Speed Limit on open roads if no other signs are shown

  • Some country roads may have an uneven surface

  • Most country roads are well sign posted
