Road Safety
  1. Alcohol limit:
    • 30mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood
    • Any person visibly under the influence of alcohol is not permitted to travel as a front seat passenger
  2. Use of mobile phone whilst driving:
    • It is illegal to use a hand held mobile phone when driving and a fine of up to €25 may be charged
    • It is legal to use a hands free unit
  3. Seat belts:
    • Compulsory for front and rear occupants
    • Children under the age of 12 years are not permitted to travel in the front of the vehicle
  4. Traffic lights regulations:
    • On road crossings, generally the red/yellow/green traffic light sequence is shown
    • Before driving into tunnels, on pedestrian markings, railway crossings,  roadworks, etc, light signals can be shown
    • Red light is the sign to “stop”
    • Red light together with yellow light means “stop”
    • Yellow flashing light means “pay attention”
    • Green light is the sign for “go ahead” – if the green light blinks 4 times (phases of a half second), this means the light will change colour imminently

  2. On the spot fines:
    • On the spot fines are issued by police officials and an official receipt should always be obtained
    • For more serious offences, sentencing of fines is carried out in local courts
General motoring advice
  1. Rush hour in built up areas:
    • At the end of working hours - 1600 - 1700hrs - most of the city roads are crowded
  2. Fuel:
    • The number of service stations outside major cities has increased in recent years
    • Most service stations have a mini market and cafe bar
    • All types of petrol available (euro diesel, unleaded 95,98,99, leaded 98)
    • Credit cards are accepted at very few major fuel stations within the Sarejevo area (check with card issuer regarding use of card in Bosnia)
    • Petrol in a can is not permitted
    • Most of the petrol stations are open 24/7
  3. Parking advice:
    • In most cities there is a charge for parking
    • In most cities the districts 1, 2 and 3 are parking zones
    • Parking regulation in district 1 is from Mon-Fri 0700 – 2000hrs with no time limit
    • Vouchers can be obtained from automatic machines or from an official parking attendant and must be clearly displayed on the windscreen of the car
    • Parking is forbidden where it is clearly sign posted NO PARKING
    • If you park in one of these areas, the car will be towed away and a police charge of €67,00 imposed

Travel tips

Some roads in Bosnia-Herzegovina are still damaged from the war with roads sometimes blocked due to landslides and de-mining activity. Also Bosnia-Herzegovina is among the few countries in Europe that has less than ten kilometres of four lane motorways.
