Bulgaria rules and regulations

Road rules
  • You are required to drive on the right and overtake on the left
  • If someone flashes their lights at you it means that they expect you to get out of the way and not that they are going to let you go first
  • Flashing headlights are also used as the all-Bulgarian warning: “Police ahead!”
Driving regulations
  1. Minimum age for rental:

    21 years of age
Rental rates may be higher for renters aged 21-24

  2. Driving Licence:
    • To drive in Bulgaria you can use your national licence, preferably accompanied by an international permit. If you leave your passport with a hotel reception, you would be well advised to ask for a copy (or take the original) if you are renting a car.

Travel tips

Take care not to park in restricted zones in Sofia, even if it seems as if everyone else is! Sofia City Council uses yellow wheel clamps or they will tow away your car, usually to the parking lot behind the National Palace of Culture.
