Road development in Estonia has not yet caught up with the economic growth of the country. As such many roads are narrow, with heavy traffic congestion and there are a lot of road works taking place on an on-going basis.
City Driving
-
Road conditions in Estonia vary. In towns the roads can suffer from potholes, while main roads outside the towns are generally in good condition
-
Dipped headlights must be used at all times
-
There are road signs marked to be careful of moose, more likely to be encountered when driving at night
-
Winter tyres are a legal requirement from 1 December to 1 March every year, but if there are severe weather conditions outside these dates (likely in most years) the dates will change accordingly. You should therefore check local conditions if driving in Estonia between October and April.
-
Visitors should, however, be prepared for traffic jams
Country Driving
-
The surface on secondary roads and those in more rural areas is covered with gravel or sand
-
Extra care should also be taken especially if driving late in the evening as visibility is normally quite poor
