Finland rules and regulations

Road rules
  • Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road 
  • A motorist driving towards a roundabout has right of way if the roundabout is not controlled by traffic lights or the right of way is not indicated with a specific traffic sign 
  • Trams always have priority 
  • Where the speed limit is 60 kmh (40mph) or lower buses have priority when leaving a bus stop 
  • Headlights must be used at all times 
  • Use of horns in towns and villages is illegal except in the case of immediate and extreme danger 
  • Otherwise, horns and headlights should be used when poor visibility demands
Driving regulations
  1. Minimum age for rental:

    21 years of age
    There is a fee for drivers under 25 years

  2. Driving Licence:
    • Valid Full Driving Licence
    • Non-Europeans must carry an International Driving Permit

Travel tips

On the Spot Fines for a variety of motoring offences can be very high in Finland and are based on an individual’s income level. However, Police are not empowered to collect fines on the spot – they must be paid at a bank or post office.
