Hungary rules and regulations
Road rules
- Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road
- Passing should occur on the left
- Where tram rails run in the centre of the road, trams or other vehicles turning left must be passed on the right
- Outside built-up areas headlights must be used night and day
- Use of horns is not allowed in built-up areas between 2200hrs and 0600hrs
- In Budapest and other towns and villages along main roads horns are always prohibited except in cases of immediate danger
- Buses leaving stops have priority after the driver has signalled his intention to pull away
- All vehicles having crossed a railway have priority if there is a cross street after the railway crossing
- Trams and buses always have priority
- Pedestrians have priority at marked pedestrian crossings and at intersections
- Bicycle lanes are indicated by a continuous yellow stripe
- Take care to give right of way at co-equal crossroads that do not have "Stop and give way" signs (except on main roads)
- Speed limits are strict and radar traps and speed cameras are often set up to catch speeding motorists on all highways in Hungary (M1, M2, M3, M5, M7, M6)
Driving regulations
- Minimum age for rental:
- 21 years of age
- Rental rates may be higher for renters aged 21-24
- Driving Licence:
- Valid Full Driving Licence
- Non-Europeans must carry an International Driving Permit
- EC format pink/green licences, however, are acceptable without an International Driving Permit
