Road rules
  • Vehicles drive on the left hand side of the road and overtake on the right 
  • All cars are right-hand drive 
  • You are not permitted to make a u-turn, other than at designated roundabouts 
  • When turning right on a main road you must give way to oncoming traffic 
  • Gardai are responsible for enforcing road traffic law – all signals given by them must be observed
Driving regulations
  1. Minimum age for rental:
    • 25 years of age
    • Restrictions apply on vehicle types booked for ages 23-28
    • An underage fee applies per day for drivers between 23-26
  2. Driving Licence:
    • Visitors to Ireland may drive using their national licence, provided it is in a language that uses Roman letters and numbers
    • Holders of other licences must also show an International Driving Permit in English
    • You are obliged to carry your driving licence with you at all times when driving

Travel tips

It is usually best to avoid city driving during the morning and evening rush-hours, especially in Dublin as the centre and the main roads leading into the city are often very busy and can be prone to major traffic congestion.
