Road rules
  • Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road 
  • At crossroads, motorists must give way to vehicles coming from their right 
  • Pedestrians have the right of way at zebra crossings 
  • All vehicles are required to keep their low-beam lights on at all times on motorways, four-lane highways and on any roads outside city centres 
  • Full beam headlights can be used only outside cities and towns and when no vehicle is approaching 
  • Headlights should be switched on from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise 
  • On three-lane roads the left lane is reserved for passing which must always be signalled in advance 
  • On motorways (autostrade) no u-turns are permitted, and stopping is permitted only in emergency parking areas or parking lanes 
  • All vehicles must carry a reflective safety-vest. The vest can be either yellow or orange, as long as it is officially certified. Drivers are required to wear the vest any time they have to stop on the shoulder of the road and get out of their vehicle. It should be kept in the passenger cabin of the vehicle – not the boot – so that it can be put on prior to the occupant of the car getting out and stepping onto the road 
  • Use of the horn is prohibited in built-up areas except in cases of immediate and extreme danger 
  • Motorists should flash their headlights at night rather than use horn 
  • Outside built-up areas motorists should use the horn to signal their intention to pass another vehicle 
  • If you are carrying a dog you must have a dog guard fitted
Driving regulations
  1. Minimum age for rental:
    • 19 years of age
    • Restrictions apply on vehicle types booked for ages 19-24
  2. Driving Licence:
    • Original and Valid Full Driving Licence.   It must be readable, and unbroken and issued at least 12 months before.
    • Non-EU citizens must carry an International Driving Permit International Driving licences are only valid outside the country of origin and when presented along with the original driving licence

Travel tips

All vehicles must carry a reflective safety-vest which must be worn by the driver at any time they have to stop on the shoulder of the road and get out of their vehicle.
