Latvia rules and regulations
Road rules
- Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road
- In towns it is forbidden to overtake stationary trams (allowing passengers to alight in safety)
- Headlights must be used at all times
- Violation of traffic rules is common and it is not unusual to be overtaken by other automobiles, travelling at high speed, even in crowded urban areas
- Drivers must give way to pedestrians even at marked intersections
- During winter, most major roads are cleared of snow but drivers should be alert for fog, snow, and ice while driving
- A foreign driver may drive a vehicle in Latvia when in possession of: driver’s licence issued in EU Member State or in EFTA country
- driver’s licence where driver’s categories are indicated as laid down by 1968 Convention of Road Traffic;
- driver’s licence where driver’s categories are not indicated as laid down by 1968 – International drivers licence is required.
The above mentioned provisions do not apply to personnel of foreign armed forces fulfilling their duties in Latvia in the framework of international co-operation.
