Road rules
  • Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road 
  • Unpaved roads can be quite common and vary in quality 
  • Deep sand and/or ditches are common 
  • During the rainy season from mid-June to mid-September dirt roads often become impassable 
  • Four-wheel drive vehicles with full spare tyres and emergency equipment are recommended
Driving regulations
  1. Minimum age for rental:

    21 years of age
    Rental rates may be higher for renters aged 21-24

  2. Driving Licence:
    • International Driving Permit

Travel tips

Particular care should be taken if driving in Bamako. Driving in city centres can, at times, be quite daunting, especially during the rush hour. It's also worth noting that a large number of motorcycles are in circulation and sometimes pedestrians are not aware of the danger.
