Namibia rules and regulations

Road rules
  • Vehicles drive on the left hand side of the road 
  • A maximum speed limit of 80kmh on gravel roads and 120kmh on tarmac roads 
  • Headlights should be switched on at dawn, just before sunrise and may be switched off at full light of day 
  • Lights must be switched on at dusk, just before sunset and must remain on during night driving 
  • Lights must be switched on when driving in dust 
  • A recommended safe following distance from the vehicle in front is the distance of approximately 4 average sized vehicles 
  • Always have your driving licence with you whilst driving and it is compulsory to carry a translation if your driving licence is not in english 
  • On a one-way road you may drive on the left and right side of the road 
  • A Traffic Officer’s instructions always takes precedence over a road sign or rule of the road 
  • You may not stop on freeways/highways unless you are instructed to do so by a Traffic Officer or for reasons beyond your control 
  • Where a road is divided by a painted or physical barrier, always stay on the  left of the division. Cross this type of division only at an opening or space specifically indicated for this purpose
  • At a roundabout you must give way to all traffic approaching from the right, unless there is a road sign or traffic officer instructing otherwise
Driving regulations
  1. Minimum age for rental:
    • 21 years of age
    • Restrictions apply on vehicle types booked for renters aged 21-23
  2. Driving Licence:
    • Valid full driving licence provided it bears the photograph and signature of the holder and is printed in English
