Road rules
- Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road
- Roundabouts are common features on the roads in Oman and there are traffic signals at critical junctions. Motorists approaching a roundabout from a two lane carriageway will note that the right lane is meant for turning right and the left lane for continuing straight ahead, turning left or turning back - unless otherwise stated
- On a three lane carriageway the right lane is for turning right, the middle lane is for going straight ahead and the left lane is for turning left or turning back unless otherwise stated
- Many roundabouts are fitted with separate slip roads for turning right
- A car flashing its full beam is generally asking for a chance to pass. A driver allowing you to cross will also communicate by flashing his lights
- Traffic monitoring is done by Traffic cameras and fines/impounding of vehicles are routine relative to the nature of the offence. Traffic fines are based up on speed exceeding the speed limit
- Speed Limits are indicated on Sign Boards and range from 40 kmh in the inner city up to 120 kmh in the distant suburbs
- Visitors should not drive without a valid licence. Motorists on a Visitors visa can drive with a valid international driving licence
- Full comprehensive insurance is essential. Visitors are urged to ensure that the vehicle they drive is covered by fully comprehensive insurance and is adequately insured against loss or damage
- Accidents resulting in death require compensation which can be very high
- Insurance accident excess amounts can be high and should be verified before accepting a vehicle
- Always carry complete vehicle documentation and driving licence. Check expiry dates in all cases
- Vehicles crossing international borders require the vehicle owner/company authorization and vehicle insurance for the country to be visited
Driving regulations
- Minimum age for rental:
21 years of age (25 yrs for NCR)
- Driving Licence:
- At least 1 year old with local licences
- International Driving Permit with visitor visa
