national car

With Spain being a popular holiday destination, driving is certainly the best method of transport to get around and see as much as possible. The roads in Spain vary. However, overall there is a good motorway network connecting all the main holiday destinations and other parts of southern Europe.

City Driving

  • The roads are generally very good, particularly in the larger city centres, like Barcelona and Valencia, where there are high volumes of traffic

  • City Driving may be a little more aggressive than in more rural areas

  • A traffic feature in most of the major cities and towns across Spain is a multiphase, semaphore controlled roundabout where traffic lights are on the actual roundabout

  • Traffic signals may be high up and can be difficult to view in the full glare of the sun

Country Driving

  • Country roads often only have one lane in each direction and are relatively narrow with tight curves. Drivers should therefore take great care when travelling on these roads

Travel tips

National Car Rental has been involved in a safety campaign in Spain during the
last two years which is focused on the reduction of accidents with rental cars.

All vehicles in Spain must carry a reflective safety-vest which must be worn by the driver at any time they have to stop on the shoulder of the road and get out of their vehicle. It should be kept in the passenger cabin of the vehicle – not the boot – so that it can be put on prior to them occupant of the car getting out and stepping onto the road.
