Switzerland rules and regulations

Road rules
  • Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road 
  • Dipped headlights are compulsory when in tunnels 
  • Overtaking is on the left 
  • When overtaking it is compulsory to signal right before returning to the right hand lane 
  • Trams should be overtaken on the right unless there is sufficient room
  • When waiting at traffic lights in some areas drivers may have to switch off engines
  • Pedestrians often have right of way
  • Snow chains are compulsory from 1st November until 15th April
  • Vehicles must be equipped with a warning triangle which must be used in any breakdown/emergency situation
Driving regulations
  1. Minimum age for rental:
    • 21 years of age
    • Rental rates may be higher for renters aged 21-24


  2. Driving Licence:
    • Valid Full Driving Licence

Travel tips

Snow chains are compulsory from 1st November to 15th April and vehicles must be equipped with a warning triangle which must be used in any breakdown / emergency situation.
