United Kingdom road safety initiatives

There is a wide-ranging campaign in the UK to improve road safety standards through the use of speed detection cameras.  These are, therefore, widely used throughout the country on a wide variety of roads, from major motorways, dual carriageways and suburban streets.  These include fixed cameras for which there are warning signs that they are operating and mobile vehicles carrying speed cameras, for which there is not always any advance warning.   Some motorways also operate variable speed limits - to manage congestion, etc - and speed cameras are utilised to control these, with overhead signs to indicate speed limits.

Travel tips

Business drivers using a vehicle for work and carrying a passenger must not smoke in cars, as part of the new smoking ban in public places laws being enforced in the UK during 2007. National Car Rental has applied a fleet-wide ban on smoking in all its vehicles to help its customers adhere to this law.
