Road rules
- Vehicles drive on the right hand side of the road
- Pass only on the left
- U–turns are prohibited in built up areas and city centres where a single or double solid line runs down the middle of the road
- Extra care should be taken when making left-hand turns into oncoming traffic
- Directional signs are green
- At a stop sign drivers should proceed in the order in which they have arrived on the intersection. If there is a tie, the vehicle on your right has the right of way.
- Recreational signs are brown and services are generally blue
- Drivers are required to stop in both directions for any school bus with flashing lights. These rules are strictly enforced in every state and have severe penalties for disobedience
- Most states in the USA have laws against littering and if caught discarding litter from a vehicle, motorists can be fined and made to collect the litter discarded
Driving regulations
- Minimum age for rental:
- 21 years of age except in New York, where it is 18 years of age
- Rental rates may be higher for renters aged 21-24
- Driving Licence:
- Drivers can drive for up to 12 months on their full valid national Driving Licence
- Additional information required for renting a car in the USA:
- If your licence does not include your home address, this must be clearly written on a separate piece of paper with home telephone number
- The address and telephone number of your accommodation in the USA
